Best of Slovenian fashion: Sanja Grcic in NYC

The Slovenian designer surely saw a successful start of the year, taking on one of the fashion capitals of the world – NYC, with sass and style

After showing her collection at Fashion Week Ljubljana, her sporty, urban women’s wear with a signature Kekec hat, inspired by the infamous Slovenian fictional child hero, became an instant hit item.

Grcic is one of the most intriguing European fashion designers at the moment. After graduating from the University of Ljubljana in Textile and Clothing Design, she started her fashion label FIRMA in 2003 and founded the Slovenian association for the contemporary design of clothing and textiles – SOTO in 2005. As the association’s active president, she has been promoting Slovenian and other eastern European designers successfully since its establishment.

Working in a range of fields, Grcic has been a stylist for the National Television and worked with some of the best film and theater directors in the region. She has exhibited from New York and Chicago to Seoul and Helsinki, her work mentioned on CNN with Style, including an Honorable mention at the Next Reel International Film Festival at the Tisch School of Art in New York.

With a temperamental and quirky eastern European flair about her, Sanja’s designs evoke all of that and more, as in her SS 2012 collection BIG HEART which she says was made for women like Amelia Erhart, Hannah Arendt, and Susan Sonntag.

In NYC she has exhibited her new collection Inside Straight in a trendy pop up boutique at Chelsea Market. One quirky fact to prove that Sanja is the one to watch is the uncanny similarity of the hat in Oscar de la Renta’s 2013-2014 collection with her own Kekec piece. An intelligent, conceptual approach to fashion makes Grcic more of an artist than a fashion designer.
