Lucia: Faith in Romanian pop – restored

If she had participated in a Romania’s Got Talent show she would’ve left all home-sitting moms with a deep sigh in their hearts. But she’s not that kind of girl

Let’s get this straight: Romanian pop music sucks. And it doesn’t suck the way say, Lady Gaga would suck. It sucks deeply, grimly, ear bleedingly. This is definitely the country where all female pop stars look like whores and yelp like bitches. Nothing else stands a chance because some moronic guy behind the TV screens says “it doesn’t sell”. Forget about the grrl movement, we never had one. Talented, classy, inspiring female role models? Yeah, right.

It was recently that this cover track, originally sung by The MOOoD, hit the radio stations and then its video hit YouTube, only to leave about 20.000 viewers in total, mesmerizing, jaw-dropping awe in its launching day. Wait, what? Romania?! Capable of coming out with beautifully sung music? Out of nowhere? Yeah, pinch me – or better, pinch this whole nation.

Lucia, whom the world has never heard of before, is a 17 year-old high-school student from Bucharest. She’s never sung in a band before and has close to no experience, apart from studying the piano from an early age and singing in a choir. Yet her acoustic music is highly emotional and resonating, without looking forward to “win over the great public”. This curly ginger makes your soul clench with emotion, constantly reminding the “uneducated”, “apathy-driven” Romanian listeners of “unheard-of” acts such as Adele, Regina Spektor and Florence Welch. If she had participated in a Romania’s Got Talent show she would’ve left all home-sitting moms with a deep sigh in their hearts. But she’s not that kind of girl. Instead, this track of hers hit prime-time on the radio right on.

As of for the behind-the-scenes present, Lucia’s said to be working with The MOOoD’s lead vocal, Marius-Victor Moise, on releasing further sweet tracks that would wipe away the disgrace off Romania’s mainstream. I hope I’m not wrong to foresee a slight chance to have faith in local music (apart from the electronic niche) restored.

*One YouTube user’s (truthful) comment: “The 16 ‘persons’ who disliked this got to be filthy lard-asses who listen to gypsy pop.”
