Ones to Watch 2012: Milos Lolic

We bring you a selection of Balkan-related artists to keep your eye on in the coming year

The young Serbian theatre director has been under the radar for quite a while now, with a number of renowned plays under his belt, such as the adaptions of Kroetz, Garcia Lorca and Melville, including a musical on the life of inventor Nicola Tesla and a take on Kurt Cobain in Velika Bela Zavera (2008).

In his plays, Lolic relentlessly pushes the boundaries of conventional drama, experimenting with sound and speech as one of the cornerstones of contemporary theatre practice. In his lucid interpretations of stage discourse, Lolic always finds room for social criticism, taking over from Fassbinder that the field of melodrama is often the key stronghold of political repression.

He is the youngest winner of Belgrade International Theatre Festival – BITEF award. His recent take on Herman Melville’s short story Bartleby, the Scrivener, performed in Mini Teater Ljubljana, emerged as the big winner of the Borstnik Meeting in Slovenia, last October. In 2012 Lolic is awaiting two premiers, Ljubljana and Vienna.
