Ones to Watch 2012: 1000names

We bring you a selection of Balkan-related artists to keep your eye on in the coming year

The Bulgarian beat-making duo have been keeping themselves busy the past year, expanding their abstract hip hop repertoire with additions of forward-pop-sounding IDM and electro. A sound they term ‘eklekto hip hop’ drives the 2011 releases for Personal Records (50 Elephant 7”), Black Acre (Before Sunrise 12”), Svetlana Industries (The Machine EP, we gave you a preview here), followed by last December’s full length Invisible Architect for Project: Mooncircle.

The album’s title apparently refers to the spontaneous and unpredictable process of modern music-making. More specifically, that one precious moment when a touch of an invisible hand (mysterious power? hand of god?) is needed to acts as a gathering source to put all those samples, found sounds, field recordings, chopped-up beats and bleeping bass lines into a meaningful audio image. Obviously, ‘names have no problems finding divine inspiration – you only need to catch them live somewhere this year.
